8 Limbs Yoga, located at 7345 35th Ave NE, Seattle, has been providing yoga to our neighborhood since 1999 when Anne Phyfe Palmer decided to open her second studio in Wedgwood. Palmer, a Seattle-resident since 1993, discovered yoga at the young age of 7, when her parents gave her a yoga book. Although she didn’t know it at the time, yoga would become her way of contributing to the community-at-large and finding balance in her personal and professional life.

Palmer’s mission is to provide yoga in a way that’s inclusive to all styles of the practice and is very welcoming. She also wanted her studios to be a place where the community could gather, practice together and have a deeper connection with ourselves.

When asked about the benefits of yoga, Palmer said, “in today’s world, we all have intense workloads, commitments to our family and can sometimes find a lot of stress in our lives. The practice of yoga helps to reset everything and creates nourishment in our body so that we can continue to do all of the things we love. It can also help us become more efficient at what we do and have more energy.”

I decided to observe a Friday morning class taught by Brent. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with warmth and a friendly smile by the Wedgwood Studio Manager, Theresa Spencer. Spencer has been with the company for 11 years and got started with yoga after being bored with other cardiovascular activities. She says, “Yoga turned out to be so much more that what I ‘thought’ it was going to be.  My practice has assisted me through thick and thin.  This was now 15 years ago.” In her role as studio manager, Spencer assists students in finding the classes that fit their schedules and interests. She also oversees the studio’s daily operations. When asked about her favorite part of the job, she insists that it’s “the community and the opportunities for continual growth and expansion.”

For the next few minutes, I watched the students pour into the studio. Each student was very friendly, smiling and excited for their practice. As everyone got settled, Brent introduced me to the class and I thanked them for having me. After that, it was complete silence, with a focus on breathing. I spent the next hour observing Brent’s class, where he taught mindfulness focus.

After the lesson, I spoke with Palmer and Spencer and asked them what advice they have for new students who are thinking about starting yoga. Palmer says “it’s important for new students to remember that flexibility is not a prerequisite and there is no requirement to have a certain body type. Come as you are and we will help yoga match your life.” Spencer added, “DO IT NOW! (Oh only if I would have started younger!!!).”
